Groups heading to Spiti via the Manali entry begin here. Groups finishing Zanskar or the Spiti circuit arrive back here, usually tired, usually craving something that is not dal and rice from a highway dhaba. Either way, Manali's cafe scene, concentrated mostly along the Manalsu River in Old Manali, is where a lot of trips actually begin or end emotionally, even if the itinerary says otherwise.
The cafes here have been operating for years, some for decades, and the good ones have earned that longevity. Here is our honest list of the best cafes in Manali.
1. Cafe 1947
The most well known cafe in Old Manali and the one that has been open the longest without interruption.
Cafe 1947 sits right by the Manalsu River near Nehru Kund, on the way to Manu Temple, and has built its reputation on a combination of riverside seating, live music evenings, and food that has stayed consistently good across the years it has been running. The wood-fired pizzas and the white sauce pasta are the dishes regulars keep coming back for, and the mushroom-based dishes get mentioned often enough in reviews that they are worth trying specifically.
It gets busy, particularly on weekends when the whole Old Manali stretch fills up. Go for a mid-morning coffee if you want the quieter version, or embrace the evening crowd and the live music if that is more your speed.

2. The Johnson's Cafe
If Cafe 1947 is the most famous, Johnson's is the most historically significant. It was the first trout specialty restaurant in India when it opened, and trout remains the reason people specifically seek it out.
The cafe sits on Circuit House Road, about 200 metres from Mall Road, with forest on one side of the seating area and mountain views on the other. Ten different preparations of Himalayan river trout are on the menu, and the baked trout with almond sauce or the trout curry with steamed spinach and Himachali red rice are the two most recommended by people who have tried multiple versions.
This is a family-run place, and that shows in the atmosphere. It is less about the aesthetic and more about the quality of what actually lands on your table.

The menu spans Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, and continental, alongside a solid drinks list including local apple cider that is worth ordering specifically since it is made from Himachal apples rather than being a generic import.
Live music runs most evenings and the crowd here trends younger and louder than Johnson's, which makes it the right choice for a group evening rather than a quiet breakfast.

4. Cafe Kathmandu
Despite the name, this is not primarily a Nepalese momo spot. Cafe Kathmandu sits right by the Old Manali bridge with river-facing open seating and a menu that spans Indian, Chinese, Israeli, and Mexican food, run by a chef-owner who has built a strong local reputation for knowing Manali and its surroundings as well as he knows his kitchen.
The trout here is specifically called out by regulars as some of the best in Old Manali, which is a genuine claim given how many places in this town serve it. The riverside open seating and the fact that the owner runs the music system himself gives it a slightly more personal feel than some of the larger, more commercial cafes nearby.

5. Drifters Cafe
Part cafe, part inn, Drifters has been a fixture of Old Manali for long enough that returning travelers specifically ask for staff by name.
The cafe operates as part of Drifters Inn on Manu Temple Road, with a sun deck cafe on the first floor for daytime meals under open sky and a ground floor space with live music and themed evenings. The food leans continental and North Indian with organic options, and the lamb dishes and breakfast spread get consistent praise from regulars.
This is the cafe for travelers who want to linger, not just eat and move on. The sun deck specifically, with mountain views and no particular urgency to leave, is the kind of spot that turns a quick coffee stop into a two hour afternoon.
